Kentucky bluegrass
Kentucky bluegrass is known as "the queen of the turf grasses."  It is a cool season grass used for home lawns and turf more than any other grass in the world.  A pure stand of Kentucky bluegrass in a lawn has a truly pleasing appearance.  This grass is also used extensively on football fields and golf courses.  Kentucky bluegrass usually sets seed in May or June.
The name bluegrass is derived from the bluish cast of the plant's inflorescence as the seed heads mature.  Kentucky bluegrass actually originated in Europe, not Kentucky!
A feature that is useful for identifying bluegrasses is the boat shape of the blade tip.
The seeds of Kentucky bluegrass are quite small and thresh with the hulls and rachilla attached.
