Kentucky
bluegrass is known as "the queen of the turf grasses." It is a cool
season grass used for home lawns and turf more than any other grass in
the world. A pure stand of Kentucky bluegrass in a lawn has a truly
pleasing appearance. This grass is also used extensively on football
fields and golf courses. Kentucky bluegrass usually sets seed in
May or June. |

|
The name
bluegrass is derived from the bluish cast of the plant's inflorescence
as the seed heads mature. Kentucky bluegrass actually originated
in Europe, not Kentucky! |
|
|
A feature
that is useful for identifying bluegrasses is the boat shape of the blade
tip. |

The seeds
of Kentucky bluegrass are quite small and thresh with the hulls and rachilla
attached. |
