     Jimsonweed
Jimsonweed is an annual plant which spreads only by seed.  It is found throughout Indiana and our neighboring states.  Jimsonweed has a very thick and shallow root system.  At maturity the stems will be very hard, thick, hollow, and purplish-red in color.
The seedling has very large narrow cotyledons.  If the stems of jimsonweed are broken off or crushed they release a very rank odor.
Jimsonweed is commonly found in fertile areas especially in cultivated fields.
The flowers are trumpet-shaped and develop into large spiny seed pods.
The poisonous seeds are irregularly shaped, pitted and grayish-black to black in color.
