Soil pH, Liming, and Ca/Mg Ratios Soil pH management, through liming, is a key component in economic soil fertility management. Data will be presented to show the economics of liming for alfalfa, corn, and soybean. The basics of lime recommendations and liming materials will be explored. Ca/Mg ratios will be discussed relative to fertilizer recommendations/applications, crop production, and pitfalls. University of Wisconsin-Madison laboski@wisc.edu Dr. Laboski was raised in rural Northeastern Pennsylvania. She obtained her B.S. in 1993 from Penn State in Soil Science, M.S. in 1995 from the University of Minnesota in Soil Science (soil management/physics), and Ph.D. in 2001 from the University of Minnesota in Soil Science (soil chemistry/fertility). She was an Assistant Professor and Extension Soil Scientist at Michigan State University from 2001-2004. Since 2004 Dr. Laboski has worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Assistant Professor and Extension Soil Scientist. Her current research includes: phosphorus availability of animal manures, phosphorus availability and movement in potato production, dynamics of soil potassium and soil test levels, new buffer pH tests for lime recommendations, and nitrogen management in corn. |
