     Downy bromegrass
Downy bromegrass is an annual grass which is closely related to the cultivated forage crop smooth bromegrass.  It is a winter annual or spring annual depending on the conditions under which it is grown.
The name Downy bromegrass is derived from the soft, downy felling pubescence on the leaves and stems of the young plant.
Downy bromegrass is like Smooth Bromegrass in that it has a characterisitc "W" mark on the leaf.  This grass matures very early, flowering and sending out a seed head in April or May and by early June the plant has completed its life cycle.  It is found throughout the entire north central region of the U.S.  The plant grows to be about 2 feet tall and has an open, spreading panicle type inflourescence.
The seed of downy bromegrass are very light and fluffy because of the awns that remain attached.  These awns become entangled in the fur of passing animals and aid in the spreading of these seeds.
